La bock or bockbier

I like Michelob Amber Bock and want to try other bocks.  From what I read Michelob’s version is nothing compared to more traditional ones.   The style is usually dark and contains more alcohol.  It’s a great beer when eating a steak.  I wondered why they had a damn goat on a lot of labels for the beer and read different explanations.  One is that the style originated in a town called Einbeck.  A lot of people would pronounce it as bock, German word for goat, and so they associated the style with a goat.  They would ask for the Einbeck beer and it sounded like they were asking for a bock beer.  Another is that monks would brew it during certain times of the year, specifically when the Capricorn constellation was prominent, so they associated a goat image with it.  They were probably all buzzed good while drinking this stuff.  One site said monks in that area brewed it thick for their sustenance during fasting.  They had a good time.  They prayed, fasted, brewed and drank beer all day. That wasn’t too bad of a life.  I saw the French spelling on Wikipedia’s French site.  Just google bock and you’ll see several sites to learn more.
