The Acadiana flag and the 22 parish region known as Acadiana. I really have to look at that and remember everything that my Dad told me and what I've read from Rocky, Winston, Dr. Brasseaux, etc. Many people my age have no idea of their actual history and ancestry and have adopted a "mythical Acadian heritage." I do have Acadian ancestry and very proud of that. I read everything I can about this side of me. But my other French ancestors are forgotten and completely overlooked. My cousin from Texas mentioned that people from the Evangeline area take offense if told that they really have no Acadian ancestry or heritage, yet they call themselves Cajun. This is very true but I don't think it should be that way at all. The rural Creoles from Evangeline have much in common with the "real Cajuns" further south and that should be celebrated. We are more like Breaux Bridge than New Orleans.
I really believe that the label Creole would have unified everyone. Instead, many people fight over what is Creole. Man, I know for sure that I'm an American and a Louisianian but the label fight gives me a damn headache.
