Creole Ancestry

My Fontenot and Brignac ancestors came from Fort Toulouse in present day Alabama. The French had set up a chain of forts to establish themselves in the area. They left in 1763 after the British took control of the area. The Guillorys came from Mobile and moved to Louisiana with the Toulouse soldiers.

My Acadian ancestors came after the exile from Acadie in 1755. Some names are Jeansonne (was Johnson), Prejean, Aucoin, Brasseaux, Pitre. The Jeansonne started off with the marriage of a Scot and an Acadian woman.

My ancestor Ortego was once an Ortega. He was from Spain. I also have Manuels who came via Mexico. My Germans came from Northeast America before the Louisiana colony. Shoef - became Shuff is one.

I have to look into my other ones. My Native American ancestors are unknown. The records say "Baptized Savage" in French. I wish I knew their story. Several Fontenots intermarried with the Alabamas and I wonder if maybe my two ancestors were Alabamas. I don't know too much about the Italians, English, Irish. I'll look into it.

2006 and here I am. A product of all their blood and culture.
