I'm not sure of "quitter" for "let" but I asked Mom and she pronounced, what I believe is quitter (let), as "kit." Dad said our nickname, Milan, was used a lot. Eduis Naquin and Uncle Gussie met up with us one day and Eduis asked to see the little Milans: Mariesha, me, Marcus, and Monica sitting in the back of the car. I didn't know that Uncle Gussie's Dad, Eduis, was a well known singer. I recognized the name from the L'Anse Grise forum and so I asked about him.
Dad said Eduis' Dad came from the Terrebonne or Lafourche area; he wasn't sure which place it was but that is from the south. The Naquins would jokingly say that he was hungry one day and followed a wagon, which was dropping food, all the way north to Evangeline Parish. Eduis was a good singer and he sang all the time, even when plowing in his field. Dad remembered going to his maison for Christmas and Eduis would sing for everyone. He sang ballads, not dance hall or bar music. Dad also remembered picking cotton with them in the fields. Eduis sang and Fee-Fin brought root beer for refreshments. They were all upset once when Fee-Fin tripped and spilled all of the root beer.
The Naquins were always close by to Dad and them. Dad's grand-pere, Hypolite, had a maison in L'Anse Grise before moving to the piniere around Caney Creek. Their home in L'Anse Grise was close to where Mitch lived for a while; close to the Platin road. Hypolite left because he had cows in the woods or piniere and wanted to live closer to them. It was a secluded area and there weren't many bridges; Eduis was stuck in Reddell for a week once because he had gone for supplies, only to have beaucoup rain make the trip back to the Caney Creek area impossible to cross. The Naquins were close by when the Heberts moved to L'Anse Jeansonne. Dad was born there. His Mouman was in her 50s so a doctor was called; Dad said everyone else had a midwife deliver them. They then went back to L'Anse Grise and again the Naquins basically did the same. They weren't following each other and I think it was people following work.
The family connections confused me but I think the following is correct. Leona married Francois Vidrine (see L'Anse Grise site for pictures). Francois was Mere Mere Enes' grand-pere. Leona and Francois' daughter, Alida (ah lee dah), married Clemen Bogard. Alida and Clemen's daughter, Gladys, married Bee Naquin. Their grandson is Kevin who plays music also:Kevin Naquin and the Ossun Playboys. The family connections connect again because Dad's grand-pere, Aurelian Guillory, and Gladys' grand-mere were brother and sister. And to boggle the mind some more, Dad's sister, Tante Ena, married Gussie Naquin - Ferrel's Dad. That's beaucoup connections. I remember big family reunions at Crooked Creek and at people's camps where everyone spoke French and I was too young to understand anything or know what's going on. I wish I could go back now.
