c’est frais affreux

It’s cold today. C’est frais affreux – it’s very cold.  It wasn’t too bad this morning but as the day went on it got colder.  Affreux is a word I hear often and in the DLF they define it as “to a great extent, terribly, very much, very.”  They even use this example and it’s similar to the cold example: Il fait chaud affreux – it’s terribly hot.  They also have it as horrible, frightful, and terrible and use this example: Il avait une colère affreux.  He had a terrible anger.  But I guess it’s not used like that here in Evangeline.  I don’t know.  It might be used that way also.  I’ll see.  It was busy today.  We're filling the boutiques back up. Dad would call Wal-Mart a magasin. And next week will be New Year.  People drink beer affreux.  Another use they have for the word is a big amount.
