Jacques Gagnard - Commander of the Avoyelles Post

Dad gave me some info on our Gagnard connections.  Jacques Gagnard was the first commander of the Avoyelles Post and he served until 1790 or 1791.  He wasn’t sure about the dates.  Avoyelles was named for the Avoyel tribe.  I still want to know if it’s true that Mansura was named by the Napoleonic soldiers.  The story says these French soldiers saw the prairies around Mansura and it reminded them of the war in Egypt.   I’ve been to Mansura, Louisiana.  I’ve never been to Egypt.  But I’ve seen Egypt in pictures and on TV.  Mansura does not look like Egypt.  So, the question is, were the soldiers drunk?
