I worked today. I was putting beer up at Wal-Mart when an older woman came up to me and asked what's the cheapest beer you have. She was a Memere and asked me directly and to the point. For a brief moment I thought I was in Ville Platte. I showed her our products but she ended up taking a seven ounce six pack of Coors. She told me that should work. Now yeah, I had a lot on my mind and a lot of work to do but I was wondering what the crap she needed the cheapest beer for. So I had to ask. She told me she wanted to kill the "snails." She said they weren't really snails because they had no shells but she said she calls them snails. The little slugs, it seems, were invading her house. So I asked her how the beer would help. She said she'll pour some in a saucer and they'll come to drink. And then they will drown. I busted laughing and told her that's a neat trick. She said, "Yes, neg, I hope dey like dat beer," and cackled.
I stopped at Mom and Dad's in the morning to visit and they had a copy of the Bonne Nouvelles. I hope I spelled that right. Gene Buller wrote another good article. This one focused on the Choctaw tribe and their history. It's great and I hope he researches it more. It seems there was a settlement around Chicot. I asked Dad if he had read it and he said yes. Then he told me that our great Paw Paw, Hypolite, could speak some Choctaw. And Paw Paw Adan could count to ten in Choctaw. I listened to this and thought how interesting that was. And how sadly, a lot of family history will go away, unknown. Jimmy Newman's Dad would come visit Hypolite and they could read the French books Hypolite had. This was in L'Anse Grise, in the woods on the west side. That's another thing Dad told me. This was way back before TV, cars, etc. Even Paw Paw, Dad has pictures of him and Maw Maw, rode around in a horse and buggy around L'Anse Grise. They couldn't speak much English. But Paw Paw Adan knew how to count to ten in the Choctaw language.
