Area Bastille Day celebrations slated for this weekend
A historic multi-ethnic Creole Families’ Bastille Day celebration and commemorative will be held in three Louisiana cities this coming weekend, designed to bring the diverse Creole families together to celebrate their common heritage and culture.
“It's about love, cher, and we don't want to lose our shared international, interracial culture,” stated Creole chef and scholar John A. La Fleur II of Washington, La. “Its languages, its good food and its wonderful social traditions and joie de vivre. We were here first and the diverse Creole families created our shared culture. The Acadians adopted this culture and we welcome them, too, as our fellow Louisiana Creoles.”
Schedule of Events:
Saturday, July 13, 4 p.m.: St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marksville: Mass In Honor of Ancestral and Contemporary Creole Families, followed by 5:00 p.m. by public celebration on the Avoyelles Parish Courthouse Square.
Sunday, July 14, 9 a.m.: Opening Ceremonies in Ville Platte at the Evangeline Parish Courthouse, 200 Court St. Solemn Invocation and Honorarium of all multi-ethnic French Creole families and introduction to Bastille Day Festival. Lunch: Jambalaya, compliments of Randal Menard Law Firm, Lafayette, La.; water and champagne for Honorees, compliments of Wal-Mart. Patisserie Contest (cakes, pies, bonbons, etc.) to be judged and La Fleur’s Creole Cookbook will be one of the four prizes to be given to the winners. Music by "Pain Perdu."
Free information on Louisiana Creole families from several participating parishes and book sales on Creole people, food, culture, language and history to help fund the proposed multi-ethnic sculptural monument and future Louisiana Creole History Museum. Sunday, July 14, 2 p.m.: St. Mary of False River Catholic Church, New Roads: Mass of Thanksgiving and Remembrance celebrated by Msgr. Robert Berggreen, pastor, and Rev. Patrick Healy, SSJ, with music by St. Mary Adult Choir and guards of honor by Knights of St. Peter Claver and Knights of Columbus. Altar vessels during Liturgy of the Eucharist will include 17th and 19th century artifacts. Reception follows at 3 p.m. at nearby Julien Poydras Centre, hosted by Pointe Coupee Historical Society, Les Creoles de Pointe Coupee and Arts Council of Pointe Coupee, including address by Mayor Robert Myer, French and Creole songs and light refreshments. La Fleur and Brian Costello, co-authors, will also hold a book signing.

Sunday’s Bastille Day programme listed
2 p.m. Mass at St Mary, 3 p.m. reception at Poydras
The general public is cordially invited to participate in New Roads’ first known public of observance of Bastille Day, slated for this Sunday, with a 2 p.m. celebration of the Mass at St. Mary of False River Church, followed by a reception at the Julien Poydras Centre.
“New Roads’ observance of French Independence Day is being held in thanksgiving for the many blessings received by the community throughout nearly three centuries of history, in memory of the pioneers of the community of French and all other ethnicities, and for the further promotion of liberty, equality and fraternity for all,” stated author, historian and archivist Brian J. Costello, who is serving as maître de ceremonie (master of ceremonies).
“Our local observance is the culmination of a weekend of events, including a Saturday afternoon Mass and evening musical celebration in Marksville and a Sunday morning festival in Ville Platte,” Costello said. “We are indebted to Mr. John A. La Fleur II, gourmet chef and scholar of Washington, La., for his long and dedicated labors in promoting Bastille Day 2013 as a special day of recognition for all Louisianans.”
The Mass at St. Mary on Sunday afternoon will be celebrated by Monsignor Robert Berggreen, pastor, and Reverend Patrick Healy, S.S.J., pastor of St. Augustine Church, assisted by Deacon Tom Robinson. In the pews will be a printed card with the words of the Lord’s Prayer in French for the convenience of worshippers.
The renowned St. Mary Adult Choir and Mrs. Sarita M. Bouanchaud, organist, will perform a number of traditional hymns and liturgical responses in Latin and English.
During the second part of the Mass – the Liturgy of the Eucharist – the altar vessels will include two of the community’s oldest and most treasured sacred artifacts: the chalice dated 1696, a gift to the faithful by Belgian nobleman Jean Rene Bouwens van der Boyen, Baron de Neeryssche; and the ciborium dated 1873, a gift by the pious Italian princess Maria Immaculata de Borbone- due-Sicilies e Borbone-Parma, Contessa di Bardi.
