Fleur de Lis

The Fleur de Lis symbol is cool for Louisiana. Louisiana was a Spanish colony too but the French and their influence dominated the culture. The symbol can be found everywhere in Louisiana and many use the Fleur de Lis to symbolize their French heritage.

The symbol is old and the sites listed explain the history behind it. France, Catholics (Virgin Mary symbol/purity), compass symbol for pointing North, Boy Scouts, New Orlean's Saints, city of New Orleans, UL of Lafayette, etc all use the Lily symbol. Many also use it for a symbol of excellence.

I have two tattoos with the Fleur de Lis. One large one by itself and one placed inside of the U.S. Seal. I still think tattoos are great even though they are mainstream now. It used to be that only military, convicts, and other "tough" guys got 'em but now you can see tats on High School kids. - It's not so tough to get one now. Ha! But I still wanted one and did.

I researched what symbol to use and the Fleur de Lis was perfect. Now, in the past France would brand the Fleur de Lis onto convicts and slaves. Read or see movie "The Three Musketeers." During and after the French Revolution period it was a hated symbol in France because it was associated with the monarchy.

But for me it's for my Louisiana Creole ancestry and culture.
