dye for pocking eggs

I went to the nursing home visit Maw Maw and Paw Paw.  They had company there and we all visited.  They had eggs (ouefs) to pock (paques) with.  We talked about that and then they gave me a history lesson on how eggs were dyed in the past.  One way was to use coffee grounds and tea leaves.  Another way was to get a bunch of leaves from the poc-poc plant and boil the eggs with that.  The eggs would come out with a yellowish color.  I found the most interesting way was using old clothes that you didn’t wear anymore.  The dye from the clothes made all kinds of colors.  The best way was using old hats.  You would boil the eggs with an old colorful hat in the pot to get really pretty colors.  I busted out laughing at that but it makes sense.  Mom and Dad told me one of Mom’s uncles was a mechanic.  For Easter he would bring back a bunch of mechanic rags to use for dye.  All their eggs were red.
