Je vas me saouler à soir encore. Prairie Femme, with some help, translated
Nathan Abshire’s Tac Tac Blues. Her post,
to me, is a perfect example of how one can learn basic French. She placed a YouTube clip at the top so you
can hear the actual song. She then
placed the French words below it. And
she included the English at the bottom.
Perfect. I liked the sound of the
song but all I could understand was getting drunk and eating popcorn. That was it.
Now I know all of the song and it’s great. To learn, I printed her post out. Then I copied the words by hand onto a piece
of paper. I’m not a teacher but I think
writing things down by hand does wonders for the brain. It sticks in your mind. She is also posting other fun educational
stuff so check that out also. But I think
the best is when you can hear the words.
I love my Louisiana French Dictionary but I only look through it after
hearing a word or phrase. The big
wonderful book is so quiet, filled with words that I can’t pronounce and the
book won’t tell me. So, some sound,
especially from music, works for me. In
case you missed it, see her translations of Mom and Dad talking about Madame
Grand Doigts and Mardi Gras. There is no
English for the Mardi Gras post but all you need to do is copy the French and
then paste it into Google translate for the English. The Google translation might not be perfect
but you’ll get the gist and be able to fill in.
You can understand what Mom and Dad are saying, say the words they’re saying
and be able to write it. If you do this
at least once a day, starting today, think how much French you’ll know next
year on this same day.
