The Spanish and French have, to me, the best names. Our Spanish ancestors were mainly military
people. Ortego lived around Pine Prairie
and Chicot. Joachim Ortego was a soldier
and lived or served in Pensacola before settling around here. Antonio DeSoto served in Texas and he also
settled in the Chicot and Pine Prairie area.
There’s a lot of Ortego around
here but I don’t see too many DeSoto.
Ortego, if I remember right, was an Ortega and the name changed later to
Ortego. Emanuella Sanchez was born in
Mexico and she was the grand-daughter of a commander at the Spanish Post on the
Rio Grande. I’m not an expert and I’m not a scholar - I
learn stuff here and there and I get stuff mixed up sometimes. I would appreciate any feedback if anything
is inaccurate. The name Marie comes up
a lot as a first name in this line.
