Creole story would make a great movie
The story about Margarita and her fight to free herself and her children in Louisiana would make a great movie. I'm not going to say all what was written about it here. Simply Google "The Margarita Case: Historical Perspectives on a
Controversial Case in 18th Century Louisiana by Winston DeVille" or Google "Margarita Guillory Grégoire" and you'll read all about their story. I have a personal interest in it because it involves my Guillory ancestors but also because it's Louisiana history, social issues and legal stuff. This all takes place in Opelousas, Grand Prairie, New Orleans and before that, Mobile. Talk about a lot of drama. Gregoire had an affair with Margarita, had children with her, freed her and their children and then his white children fought him to keep them as slaves after their Mom died. Margarita had to fight for years off and on to get away from them. Gregoire had already freed her twice and they still kept going to court. This was before Louisiana was American. The case went from Opelousas to New Orleans and then Cuba because it was so complicated. Marguerite (Margarita in French) and her story has a good ending but it took years to do so. Hollywood couldn't make up a true story like this to portray. Real life is far more interesting.
